Mitsui Fudosan to Open Group's Most Luxurious Hotel Yet in Hakone

Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. will open "HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE," a luxury hotel in Kowakidani, Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, on December 15, 2026. It is the second property under the "HOTEL THE MITSUI" brand, following "HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO," which opened in 2020, and will be the most luxurious hotel in the Mitsui Fudosan Group's portfolio. The hotel will be affiliated with The Luxury Collection, the luxury brand of Marriott International, and will be operated by Mitsui Fudosan Resort Management Co., Ltd.

The hotel is located within Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park in Kowakidani, Hakone Town, on the former site of a Mitsui family villa. The site area is approximately 40,980 tsubo (approx. 1,458,200 sq. ft.), and the hotel will have 126 guest rooms, ranging from 48 sq. m (approx. 500 sq. ft.) Deluxe Rooms to villas exceeding 100 sq. m (approx. 1,100 sq. ft.) and suites exceeding 200 sq. m (approx. 2,200 sq. ft.).

The Mitsui Fudosan Group's hotel and resort business is broadly divided into limited-service hotels centered in urban areas and its resort/luxury segment. In the resort/luxury segment, the company has been developing upscale hotels through partnerships with overseas hotel brands, and also plans to open "Waldorf Astoria Tokyo Nihonbashi," Hilton's top-tier brand, at Tokyo Midtown Nihonbashi, which is scheduled for a grand opening in fall 2027.

As tourism demand recovers in Hakone, luxury hotel development is advancing. In Sengokuhara, Fujita plans to open a hotel in 2028 that will mark the first Japan debut of Hyatt's luxury brand Alila, while in Gora, THE SANKEI BUILDING CO., LTD. and Haseko Real Estate Development Co., Ltd. are also proceeding with plans to open a hotel under Hilton's luxury brand "LXR Hotels & Resorts" in the summer of 2028 (see related article: Fujita To Develop First Alila Luxury Hotel in Japan in Hakone's Sengokuhara). Through this project, Mitsui Fudosan aims to leverage its top-tier hotel brand and Marriott International's customer base to capture recovering tourism demand in Hakone as well as domestic and international demand for upscale stays.
