Fujita To Develop First Alila Luxury Hotel in Japan in Hakone’s Sengokuhara

Fujita, part of the Daiwa House Group, said June 29, 2026, that it has started development of Alila Sengokuhara Hakone, a hotel that will bring Hyatt’s luxury Alila brand to Japan for the first time, in Sengokuhara, Hakone. Fujita will serve as the project owner and handle design and construction, while Hyatt will operate the hotel. Kengo Kuma & Associates will supervise the architectural design. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2028.
The development site is located in Sengokuhara within Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, about a 25-minute drive from Hakone-Yumoto Station. The building will have two floors above ground and two basement levels, with a Gross Floor Area of approximately 3,111 tsubo (approx. 110,700 sq. ft.). The hotel is planned to have 60 guestrooms, including 11 suites, and all guestrooms will include bathrooms with natural hot spring water.
Fujita has a track record of collaborating with Hyatt, including serving as project owner for Grand Hyatt Seoul and handling construction for Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono. Hyatt operates 22 hotels in Japan, and the opening of this project is expected to expand its brand portfolio in the country to 10 brands.
According to statistics from Hakone Town, the number of visitors to the town in 2025 increased 4% year over year to approximately 21 million, recovering to pre-pandemic levels. Among overnight visitors, the number of foreign tourists increased about 28% year over year, while domestic general travelers remained nearly flat, indicating that inbound tourism is driving the recovery in tourism and lodging demand. The two companies aim to leverage their history of collaboration to capture demand for luxury resorts in Hakone.
