JR Kyushu to Open Fourth Hotel Near Hakata Station, Expanding Brand Presence Amid Booming Demand

JR Kyushu Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to open a new hotel, tentatively named Hakata Ekimae 3-Chome Hotel, in Fukuoka’s Hakata district. The project, unveiled in June 2025, will bring a 150-room hotel to a 1,480 sqm (approx. 15,930 sq. ft.) site, with an expected opening during fiscal year 2028.

The land and building are owned by Yaoya Co., Ltd., a long-established Fukuoka-based company known for operating the Yaoya Hakata Hotel, which features the rare on-site natural hot spring “Yaoya-no-Yu.” While Yaoya has experience in hotel operations, it has opted to delegate the management of this new property to JR Kyushu Hotels & Resorts, leveraging the latter’s brand recognition and customer draw.

The project is designed to respond to the surging hotel demand in Fukuoka. The recent extension of the Fukuoka City Subway’s Nanakuma Line to Hakata Station in 2023 significantly improved access between Hakata and the central Tenjin district. In parallel, the government-led large-scale redevelopment initiative “Hakata Connected” is driving new concentrations of office and retail facilities in the area. These developments have stimulated inbound tourism as well as domestic business and leisure travel, increasing demand for branded hotels known for quality and reliability.

With this latest project, JR Kyushu Hotels & Resorts appears to be strengthening its dominant positioning strategy in the Hakata area. The company currently operates three hotels near Hakata Station, including the upscale THE BLOSSOM HAKATA Premier and JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Fukuoka. The addition of a fourth property will allow the operator to pursue operational efficiencies and cross-property customer referrals, further solidifying its competitive advantage in the local market.
