Tonowa Garden Mejirodai Opens as University-Industry Healthcare Complex

Mitsubishi Estate Residence Co., Ltd. held the grand opening of Tonowa Garden Mejirodai, a healthcare-focused mixed-use facility developed on the University of Tokyo’s Mejirodai campus, on July 7, 2025. The project, selected in May 2020 through a public call for development partners, was formalized under a business agreement with the University of Tokyo in March 2022 and broke ground in 2023.
The facility integrates research, medical care, eldercare, childcare, and community functions, featuring the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine’s Global Nursing Research Center (GNRC) Open Lab, a home-visit nursing station, clinic, pharmacy, senior rental housing, assisted-living facility, rehabilitation-focused day-care center, after-school childcare, and a multipurpose community space.
The name “Tonowa Garden” combines the Japanese words for “connections” (wa, meaning circle or ties) and “garden,” reflecting its vision of fostering diverse community interactions. Mitsubishi Estate Residence aims to establish a university-industry collaborative development model that leverages academic expertise and local resources to create a sustainable healthcare community supporting wellness, longevity, and disaster resilience.
