NTT Urban Development Completes Luxury Hotel Project on Former Kyoto School Site

NTT Urban Development announced on October 24, 2025, the completion of its luxury hotel redevelopment project on the former Motoshinmichi Elementary School site in Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward. The project includes Capella Kyoto—the first property in Japan by Capella Hotels and Resorts—scheduled to open in 2026. In addition, the Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theater has been rebuilt, and new community facilities have been constructed as part of the redevelopment.
The site is approximately a 4-minute walk from Keihan Main Line’s Gion-Shijo Station and an 8-minute walk from Hankyu Kyoto Line’s Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station. The hotel building is a six-story structure (four above ground and two below) with a gross floor area of approximately 15,700㎡ (approx. 169,000 sq. ft.) and 89 guest rooms. It was completed in September 2025. The theater building is five stories (three above ground and two below), with a gross floor area of approximately 5,000㎡ (approx. 54,000 sq. ft.), and was completed in March 2025.
