Kobe Bussan to Develop New Cold Storage Logistics Center in Funabashi

On June 20, 2025, Kobe Bussan Co., Ltd.—operator of the “Gyomu Super” supermarket chain—announced plans to construct a new cold storage logistics hub tentatively named the “Funabashi Logistics Center” in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture. The total planned investment is JPY 15 billion, with construction scheduled to begin in October 2026 and completion anticipated by August 2028. Once operational, the facility is expected to reduce logistics costs by approximately JPY 1.5 billion annually through lower warehouse expenses and improved transportation efficiency.

Located in a logistics-dense waterfront zone of Funabashi, the site offers strategic access to National Route 357 and the Wangan-Narashino Interchange, making it well-suited for both wide-area deliveries across the Kanto region and last-mile supply to stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The four-story, steel-framed facility will offer a gross floor area of approximately 5,747 tsubo (approx. 189,950 sq. ft.) and will accommodate three temperature zones—frozen, refrigerated, and chilled—to enable stable inventory turnover of seasonally sensitive items such as meat, seafood, and commercial frozen foods.

Kobe Bussan currently operates around 1,094 Gyomu Super stores across Japan as of January 2025, primarily through a franchise model. By increasing the share of private-brand products sourced directly from overseas partner factories, the company has maintained its competitive pricing. As the expansion of cold-chain items and overseas procurement has raised inventory demands, the new logistics center will play a critical role in enhancing the company’s in-house storage and distribution processing capabilities within the Kanto region.
