Sanwa Soko to Complete Pharmaceutical Warehouse in Yokohama and One of Japan’s Largest Hazardous Materials Warehouses in Daito

Sanwa Soko will invest in two new warehouse facilities in Yokohama’s Tsurumi Ward, Kanagawa Prefecture, and in Goryo, Daito, Osaka Prefecture. Both facilities are scheduled for completion in June 2026. In Yokohama, the company will open a temperature-controlled automated warehouse designed for pharmaceutical products, while in Daito it will bring online what is believed to be one of the largest hazardous materials automated rack warehouses in Japan. The company intends to significantly expand its storage capacity for temperature-sensitive goods and hazardous materials, respectively.

The new warehouse at the Yokohama site will have a Gross Floor Area of approximately 2,511 tsubo (approx. 89,349 sq. ft.) (with the automated warehouse portion calculated based on four floor levels). The work area will be a three-story above-ground structure, while the automated warehouse portion will feature a steel-frame structure with a double-deep configuration. The facility will support temperature-controlled storage and inventory management and will comply with GDP guidelines for pharmaceuticals.

The new warehouse at the Daito site will have capacity for 3,000 pallet positions, equivalent to 12,000 200-liter drums. It will be a hazardous materials automated rack warehouse capable of handling Class 4 flammable liquids under Japan’s Fire Service Act. The facility will adopt double-deep and flow-rack systems and is designed to support the supply chains for chemicals and hazardous materials.

The Yokohama site is located within about 5 kilometers of Kohoku IC and will function as a delivery base serving the Keihin industrial area and the coastal areas of Tokyo and Yokohama, where pharmaceutical, chemical and food-related companies are concentrated. The Daito site is within about 5 kilometers of Osaka JCT and Kadoma JCT and will serve as a distribution base covering the Osaka urban area as well as the Keihanshin region, Chugoku, Shikoku and northern Kyushu.

Founded in 1960, the company has specialized in the storage and transport of chemicals and hazardous materials. With the two new sites, it appears to be deepening its competitive strengths in the specialized fields of pharmaceutical logistics and hazardous materials logistics. In Yokohama, it plans to introduce AGVs and depalletizing robots, indicating that it is also moving ahead with automation and labor saving.
