Sakurajima Development SPC Breaks Ground on 817-Room International-Branded Resort Near Universal Studios Japan

Kashima Corporation, Japan Post Real Estate, SMFL Mirai Partners, and Keihanshin Building have jointly capitalized SPC Sakurajima Development GK, which has formally broken ground on the “Osaka Sakurajima Resort” hotel project in Osaka’s Konohana Ward. Positioned as an official hotel of Universal Studios Japan (USJ), it is the only project among the official hotels to feature internationally branded operators.

The development will consist of 14 above-ground floors and one basement level, built with SRC and steel construction. It will span a site area of 17,246 sqm and a Gross Floor Area of 100,494 sqm (approx. 1,082,000 sq. ft.). Located a six-minute walk from JR Sakurajima Line’s Universal City Station, the project is scheduled for completion and opening in 2029. The hotel will house three brands—InterContinental (244 keys), Kimpton (246 keys), and Holiday Inn Resort (327 keys)—for a total of 817 rooms.

Around Universal Studios Japan, lodging demand continues to trend high, supported by recovering inbound tourism and resilient domestic travel demand. Official hotels are mainly supplied by Japanese brands, and projects involving global hotel brands remain limited. With 817 rooms across three brands developed in a single project, the new resort aims to capture demand ranging from luxury to family segments and contribute to expanding the accommodation stock and enhancing the overall stay experience in the area.
