Toshiba to Relocate Headquarters to Kawasaki for the First Time in 24 Years

Toshiba to Relocate Headquarters to Kawasaki for the First Time in 24 Years

Toshiba Corporation will consolidate its headquarters functions from the Hamamatsucho Building in Tokyo’s Minato Ward to the Smart Community Center (Lazona Kawasaki Toshiba Building) in Kawasaki City between July 2 and August 25, 2025. The company also plans to officially change its registered head office to Kawasaki on August 1, marking the first time in approximately 24 years that Toshiba’s HQ will be based outside Tokyo.

This relocation is a key pillar of Toshiba’s “Revitalization Plan,” aimed at accelerating decision-making by integrating corporate functions with business and R&D departments at a single site. The move to a company-owned property is expected to reduce fixed costs such as rent, while enhancing both resilience and productivity through features like seismic isolation, 72-hour emergency power supply, and ABW/free-address office design. The headquarters will be reorganized from 23 divisions down to 13, with up to 4,000 employees relocated to focus on governance and growth support.

The new headquarters is located in a redeveloped area directly connected via pedestrian deck to JR Kawasaki Station (1-minute walk) and a 5-minute walk from Keikyu Kawasaki Station. The building offers approx. 31,600 tsubo (approx. 104,500 sq. ft.) of gross floor area, with column-free floors of approx. 2,000 tsubo (approx. 6,600 sq. ft.) and a ceiling height of 3,000 mm. Environmental features include a ZEB Ready-level performance with over 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to previous buildings, achieved through a combination of image sensor-linked BEMS and hybrid air conditioning systems.

Completed in March 2013, the 15-story large-scale office building is owned by Nomura Real Estate Building (formerly NREG Toshiba Real Estate) and fully leased by Toshiba Group. It also boasts two 1,500kVA emergency generators and a large water tank, ensuring at least 72 hours of business continuity during power outages—a strong BCP measure.

Meanwhile, redevelopment is underway at the former Hamamatsucho HQ site as part of the national strategic special zone project “BLUE FRONT SHIBAURA” led by JR East and Nomura Real Estate Development. The site, totaling approx. 14,200 tsubo (approx. 47,000 sq. ft.), will feature twin towers reaching approx. 230 meters in height and approx. 166,000 tsubo (approx. 548,000 sq. ft.) of gross floor area. The southern tower “TOWER S” was completed in February 2025, while the northern “TOWER N” is scheduled for completion in fiscal year 2030. The development will include office, retail, and rental residential components.
