Sankei Building to Convert Washington, D.C. Office Building Into Rental Apartments

The Sankei Building signed a joint venture agreement with U.S. developer Duball, LLC on July 15, 2026, and acquired an existing office building in Washington, D.C. The building will be converted into about 150 rental apartments, marking the second conversion project the company has undertaken with Duball, LLC in the city. Construction is scheduled to start in November 2026 and to be completed in the first half of 2028.
The property stands at 1090 Vermont Avenue, NW, about three blocks from the White House, with two stations and four rail lines within reach. The existing building was completed in 1979. After conversion it is planned to have 12 floors above ground and three basement levels with a gross floor area of approximately 4,367 tsubo (approx. 155,400 sq. ft.), comprising 30 studios, 54 one-bedroom, 63 two-bedroom and three three-bedroom units. Retail space and parking will also be provided.
The first project, begun in 2024, involves converting an office building completed in 1941 into 161 rental apartments and is scheduled for completion in September 2026. In June 2026 the company also acquired a stake in an existing office building in Boston and is converting it to rental housing, expanding its conversion business across several U.S. cities (see related article: Sankei Building Acquires Stake in Boston Office Building for Residential Conversion).
